Being such a HUGE animal lover it was no surprise to figure out whom I wanted to help so all I needed was to find the where. I joined up with HAWC in the fall of 2013 and it has been a great and rewarding volunteer opportunity for me. Once a month I head to the local shelter and photograph pets with the assistance of HAWC. This is sometimes challenging when you're photographing animals that may not want to be photographed due to shyness, being scared or at times simply rambunctious. Then there are the not so fun times when you're cleaning up after an accident or wiping the dog drool from your camera lens. But, then there's the other side...the kisses, hugs...yes hugs, tag wags, the purring, that perfect shot that shows off their personality and last but not least is finding out that they have been adopted.
So what is HAWC? Harnett Animal Welfare Coalition (HAWC) is a non-profit organization that works to build a community partnership for the benefit of the county's animals. A proactive partnership between our residents, county agencies, county leaders and advocacy/human groups is the key to eliminating our unwanted animal population and ensuring a humane environment for our county's animals. We advocate for our animals with county leaders, through partnerships with humane organizations and through community initiatives. We work to increase adoptions at our shelter by working with our shelter's staff to promote our shelter within the community and enrich the shelter experience for our community. Our shelter can be considered a community place where our residents feel welcome and encouraged to adopt a new pet. We work to reduce the numbers of unwanted companion animals through spay/neuter initiatives, community outreach, and education. Our vision is for spay/neuter to be the rule, not the exception: for our county shelter to be the preferred venue for pet adoption in Harnett County; for all pet owners to have proper resources available to prevent surrendering of companion animals, and for all animals in our county to be treated humanely. The key to solving our animal issues is a community working together in a positive, responsible, proactive manner. Together, we can do this!
