☀️ How to Enjoy Summer With Your Dog Without the Heat Stress

Keeping Your Dog Safe, Comfortable, and Happy During North Carolina Summers

Summer in North Carolina has a personality all its own.

Warm mornings arrive early. Afternoon temperatures climb quickly. And the humidity can make even simple outdoor activities feel heavier than expected.

For people who share their lives with dogs, this season often brings an important question:

How do we continue enjoying time together while keeping our dogs safe in the heat?

At Kimberly Austin Photography, a professional pet photographer serving Lillington, Raleigh, Holly Springs, Southern Pines, and surrounding North Carolina communities, we spend a great deal of time outdoors with dogs during portrait sessions.

Over the years, one thing has become clear.

Dogs love being outside with their people. But they rely on us to recognize when the heat becomes too much.

Learning how to adjust our routines during the summer months allows both dogs and their people to continue enjoying the season safely.

Many dogs naturally gravitate toward water during the summer months, making rivers, lakes, and coastal areas some of the safest and most enjoyable places for them to stay cool while still getting exercise.

Why Summer Heat Affects Dogs Differently

Unlike humans, dogs cannot regulate their body temperature through sweating across their skin.

Dogs primarily cool themselves by panting.

This works well in moderate temperatures, but when heat and humidity climb together — something common in North Carolina summers — it becomes much harder for dogs to release excess heat.

Certain dogs may be more sensitive to heat than others, including:

• Short-nosed breeds such as bulldogs or pugs

• Very young puppies

• Senior dogs

• Dogs with thick coats

• Dogs with underlying health conditions

Because of this, it’s important for dog owners to adjust summer routines to match the weather.

Simple Ways to Keep Dogs Comfortable in Summer

Fortunately, enjoying summer with your dog doesn’t require giving up outdoor activities entirely.

A few thoughtful adjustments can make a big difference.

Choose cooler times of day

Early mornings and late evenings are often the safest times for outdoor walks or play sessions.

Bring plenty of water

Just like people, dogs need consistent hydration when spending time outside.

Watch the pavement

If pavement feels hot to your hand, it is likely too hot for your dog’s paws.

Take frequent breaks

Allow your dog time to rest in the shade and cool down before continuing activity.

Small adjustments like these allow dogs to remain comfortable while still enjoying time outdoors with their families.

Some of my favorite summer memories with dogs happened on days just like this. Molly and Gidget never needed much more than shallow water, a toy, and a little space to run.

Listening to Your Dog

Dogs often communicate discomfort through subtle signals.

Slowing down during walks.

Seeking shade.

Panting more heavily than usual.

When dogs show these signs, they are asking for a break.

One of the most important parts of caring for a dog is learning to recognize these signals and responding before the situation becomes stressful for them.

Summer doesn’t need to mean pushing through the heat.

Sometimes the best choice is simply sitting together in the shade and enjoying a quiet moment.

Outdoor Portrait Sessions During Summer

When planning outdoor portrait sessions during warmer months, timing becomes especially important.

At Kimberly Austin Photography, outdoor portrait sessions are scheduled during cooler parts of the day whenever possible. Early morning and evening sessions allow dogs to remain comfortable while still enjoying the beauty of natural outdoor settings.

Many dogs relax quickly when the environment feels calm and safe.

Those relaxed moments often produce the most meaningful photographs — moments that reflect the genuine relationship between dogs and their people.

Professional Pet Photography in North Carolina

Families throughout Lillington, Raleigh, Holly Springs, and Southern Pines choose professional pet photography because they want to preserve the moments they share with their dogs throughout every season.

From quiet summer evenings to outdoor adventures along the Cape Fear River, these photographs become lasting reminders of the life shared between dogs and the people who love them.

Because every season with a dog tells part of the story.

Slowing Down for the Season

Summer doesn’t always have to be about doing more.

Sometimes it’s about slowing down.

Taking shorter walks.

Finding shaded trails.

Spending quiet evenings outside while the air begins to cool.

For many dogs, those calm moments beside the people they love are what matter most.

And those simple moments often become the memories we treasure years later.

Let the Magic Begin

If you’re searching for a professional pet photographer in North Carolina, Kimberly Austin Photography offers both studio and outdoor portrait sessions designed to capture the quiet moments that define life with your dog.

Because the best photographs rarely come from rushing.

They come from simply being present.

What does your dog love most about summer?
